I haven't been able to get hold of a copy of "A History of Hawera and the Waimate Plains" to see what this has to say about the incident. I don't recall my grandfater, John Charles Downey, mentioning this to me. Family tradition says that my great-great grandfater, John Stuart Downey, and/or his son, Harold Egmont Downey, were offered 10 acres in Hawera or 300 acres near Te Ngutu O Te Manu following the Maori Wars. They chose the latter and I assume one or both would have been in the Hwawera Militia. Does anyone know of records of the Militia?

book recommendation (you can borrow from me if you like) - The Struggle without end - Ranginui Walker. Sheds a lot of new light on new zealand history that I was previously unaware of. Definately worth reading.
