Brian McLaren/Sex & Community
Brian McLaren quotes Wendell Berry:
If you destory the ideal of the gentleman and all remove from men all expectations of courtesy and consideration toward women and children, you have prepared the way for an epidemic of rape and abuse. If you depreciate the sanctity and solemnity of marriage not just as a bond between two people, but as a bond between those two people and their community, their forebears, their children and their neighbours, then you have prepared the way for an epidemic of divorce, child neglect, community ruin and loneliness.

I would suggest that rape perhaps is a symptom of a powerless people, rather than a mannerless people. Plenty of people that have raped are perfectly able to be polite and carry on normal life outside of the home. That’s what I’ve seen anyway.
Ahh
But it is the depth of the polite, the heighth of the manner that is at stake.
People have been powerless, and many will contintue to be so for as long as man exists to prevent the realisation of a truely idealised system of government. This doesn’t nessecarily transliterate into schpeels of abuse.
The ‘polite’ you may be exposed to is more a paint coat than a brick wall. You scrape hard enough you will expose their ‘true’ manners. The incidence of crime, and abuse skyrockets in this here our society. We are not powerless. We are however morrally foundationless, precipitating the current trends and whatnot.
