{"id":346,"date":"2004-05-03T00:18:19","date_gmt":"2004-05-02T12:18:19","guid":{"rendered":"\/?p=346"},"modified":"2004-05-03T00:18:19","modified_gmt":"2004-05-02T12:18:19","slug":"church","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/mhjb.co.nz\/blog\/archives\/346","title":{"rendered":"Church"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Reverend Kavanaugh led the services at church today, so we sang from the old blue hymnal. #68 (by Isaac Watts, from Psalm 39), which we&#8217;ve not often sung, I found particularly worthwhile:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Teach me the measure of my days,<br \/>\nThou Maker of my frame;<br \/>\nI would survey life&#8217;s narrow space,<br \/>\nAnd learn how frail I am.<\/p>\n<p>A span is all that we can boast,<br \/>\nAn inch or two of time;<br \/>\nMan is but vanity and dust<br \/>\nIn all his flower and prime.<\/p>\n<p>See the vain race of mortals move<br \/>\nLike shadows o&#8217;er the plain;<br \/>\nThey rage and strive, desire and love,<br \/>\nBut all the noise is vain.<\/p>\n<p>Some walk in honor&#8217;s gaudy show,<br \/>\nSome dig for golden ore;<br \/>\nThey toil for heirs, they know not who,<br \/>\nAnd straight are seen no more.<\/p>\n<p>What should I wish or wait for, then,<br \/>\nFrom creatures earth and dust?<br \/>\nThey make our expectations vain,<br \/>\nAnd disappoint our trust.<\/p>\n<p>Now I forbid my carnal hope,<br \/>\nMy fond desires recall;<br \/>\nI give my mortal interest up,<br \/>\nAnd make my God my all.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Whis puts me in mind of the following (#205, by Charles H Gabriel, from Psalm 103), which is my forever favourite:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The tender love a father has<br \/>\nFor all his children dear,<br \/>\nSuch love the Lord bestows on them<br \/>\nWho worship Him in fear.<\/p>\n<p>The Lord remembers we are dust,<br \/>\nAnd all our frailty knows;<br \/>\nMan&#8217;s days are like the tender grass,<br \/>\nAnd as the flower he grows.<\/p>\n<p>The flower is withered by the wind<br \/>\nThat smites with blighting breath;<br \/>\nSo man is quickly swept away<br \/>\nBefore the blast of death.<\/p>\n<p>Unchanging is the love of God,<br \/>\nFrom age to age the same,<br \/>\nDisplayed to all who do His will<br \/>\nAnd reverence His Name.<\/p>\n<p>Those who His gracious cov&#8217;nant keep<br \/>\nThe Lord will ever bless;<br \/>\nTheir children&#8217;s children shall rejoice<br \/>\nTo see His righteousness.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A friend told me recently that although he doesn&#8217;t claim to understand it, he finds the Gospel of John rather beautiful. This morning Mr Oosterbaan read the first chapter or so of it, and I knew what my friend was talking about.
