Method: PAYE is calculated with the current NZ tax brackets effective from 31 July 2024 (10.5% to $15,600, 17.5% to $53,500, 30% to $78,100, 33% to $180,000, 39% above). Your PAYE is split across the Core Crown expense functional classification: forecast 2026/27 core Crown expenses total $154.7b (BEFU 2026). Why these figures may differ from other "taxpayer receipt" tools: this receipt divides your income tax across core Crown expenses ($154.7b) so every line adds up to your total tax. Some tools instead spread it across total Crown spending (~$200b, which also includes Crown entities, ACC and SOEs), which makes each category's dollar figure smaller.
* Note on Transport: 2026/27 created the new Ministry of Cities, Environment, Regions and Transport (MCERT), merging the legacy Ministries of Transport, Housing & Urban Development, and the Environment. The new Vote sits across several functional buckets, so the Transport figure reflects that reclassification. Budget 2026 adds $477m operating and $2.7b capital to Vote Transport.
Sub-breakdowns under the larger categories are sourced from the Estimates of Appropriations 2026/27 (Treasury, 4 June 2026). Tap the ↗ icon on any line to open its source. Smaller "Other" buckets remain illustrative. Excludes ACC levies, KiwiSaver, student loan repayments, GST and other indirect taxes.
