Actung stations

by Matthew Bartlett @ 10:50 am

We use about 800 million plastic supermarket bags every year in New Zealand. That’s lame, they’re all made of oil, 90% are imported, and they’re hard to recycle. Bad stewardship! Happily, a solution is at hand. Ireland had the same problem and put a €0.15 (NZ$0.30) levy on each bag in 2002 and now use about 10% of the bags they used to. The levy goes towards other waste management efforts. (This is an example of Paul Hawken’s ‘tax the bads, not the goods’ idea.) If you’re into it, you can find out more at the BagsNOT site, or read the short Zero Waste report, and then do what I did and write a letter to your MP. BagsNot have a convenient list of MPs’ electorates and email addresses.

What do you do when your laptop has run out of zone changes, and you’re stuck on a mostly useless zone?

Nice. I reckon we should also be charged 5-10c per plastic and glass bottle we use, some of which can be claimed back when it is recycled and leaving the rest going to help start up efficient and local recycling stations.

You can rip all DVDs onto the computer before watching them.

Pak n Slave is the supermarket of the future. They already charge for bags.

Heres a question: any idea what proportion of NZ’s total waste comes from hospitals?? I have no idea but reckon it must be pretty high based on the amount of STUFF we go through every day on our ward. I think I will start a campaign if I make it through my first 6 months as an RN.

I heard (on Nat. Radio)there is sufficient hydrocarbon in a shopping bag to run a small car about 300 metres or a light bulb for I think 40 minutes!

Re-flash the DVD drive firmware, ya’all

Re: DVD drives, I was looking this up yesterday. This site is a useful one: http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/rpc1.htm

As an alternative to reflashing firmware you can send the drive back to the manufacturer and get them to reset it. That way your warranty isn’t voided. That way is also a pain in the bum.

use DVDIdle or similar software. Allows complete region free. Firmware flash didn’t work on mine.

“What do you do when your laptop has run out of zone changes?” You slap yourself in the face for watching too many dvd’s and changing the zone and seeing the messages come up saying “you have 3 changes left” “you have 2 changes left” etc. All you need to do is install dvd genie from the start and you are away laughing.

ps, I also recommend not trying to fix this type of thing when you are drunk.

    many regards,
    David
