Heavenly Burlesque review: 6.5 out of 10. Very funny. Some sweet skills in evidence, particularly with the hula hoops, acrobatics and the shopping trolley of desire. But it was way too short, only about an hour long ($0.45/minute) and the ‘afterparty’ deserves those scare quotes and featured Batucada Sound Machine. BSM are a ‘band’ with too much percussion and two few skills and are about as burlesque as Radiohead. Kathy and I left to avoid having to kill ourselves, but not before having our photos taken by a woman with nice eyes for Capital Times. Keep your eyes peeled, if we make it, we’ll be the wiggly and colour-coordinated ones.
UPDATE: I’m informed I wrongly identified the post-HB band: It wasn’t Batucada Sound Machine. So I hope they can forgive me for that. Apparently it was The Beat Squad. Anyway, I didn’t like them, though others at the function did. BSM, I apologise for tarnishing your good name. Please send me a CD so that I can confirm that you do not, in fact, suck.

apart from the afore mentioned ‘band’ (those batucada fools should be banished from wellington. horrors upon horrors!) i declare heavenly burlesque to be delicious! the humour was perhaps not tasteless enough and the show could have happily been twice as long but plenty of the best laughs i’ve had since heaven knows when! i do hope we’re in the capital times, after all, how often do we color coordinate? good times at vintage, i can recommend their small dancefloor for ahem, shakin what your mama gave ya.
I think HB were too busy being funny to be truly sexy or truly truly outrageous tho, ya know? The flyers for this featured a glorious nymph wearing nothing but thigh-high fishnets, modesty provided by a swath of red ribbon in mid-air. I don’t recall any such titilation onstage. Hrrmph.
Let’s plan in advance next time and ALL colour coordinate.

I just saw the Beat squad on Saturday at the Cross and they were frikken awesome!! I just did a search on their name and found this…I wonder if it’s the same band…
