World Press

by Matthew Bartlett @ 5:43 pm

I went to the World Press 2004 exhibition. Quite horrible, mostly. This set of photos stood out for me. Outside Shed 11 there was a sign. It had an arrow point towards the exhibition: ← World Press 2004, and one away from it: Comfort Zone →.

I found it pretty draining myself.

Same. And some images were definitely NOT suitable for children. Like, for instance, someone holding up a severed head by the ears. Enough to give nightmares.

that was a photo that I did not understand why it won. Sure, it’s ‘being there at the moemnt’ and all that, but surely there are other amazing photos that meet the same criteria…

  4. Grow some balls. I went to the one in ’02 that was ‘there in the moment’ and had a big fish – mouth wide open – as it swallowed a still live little fish – also wide opened mouth, but for different reasons – and it was perhaps my favourite photo of all time. People dying is always going to get more crowds into an exhibit than people whittling cheese on a deck chair or whatever. Sad, but true.
