I enjoyed the article. We’ve been talking/posting lately about how words are losing their power and beauty and I wrote rather a paen to words and good writing. But sometimes if you can get the meaning across, that’s enough. That’s the highest goal, after all. Swish style can distract. Sometimes you get more out of rough diamonds than polished stones – I like coming away thinking “could have been better written, but great stuff!”.
Have you read Walking on Water by Madeleine L’Engle, about the artist-as-Christian. I haven’t yet, but I’ve heard good things.
i haven’t read it either, will keep a lookout though.
w.r.t. style/content, i’ve always appreciated Orwell’s essay on Politics and the English Lanugage
I must say that that to read the evocative essay of Orwell’s was of most vertiable enjoyment to myself, as I incline to imagine that it may also be to many others. Thank you, Matt, for sharing with us from your wide and widening collection of literary riches.
Tthat letter to an artist has good points but it is awfully horrible to read.No flow or something.

I’d buy the flange if I wanted one. But I don’t. Sorry Matt’s Friend.
