Yesterday evening Casey Aaron Jonathan Richie Mr Heeringa and I went to Chris & Elaine‘s and talked with and listened to Brian J Walsh for a couple of hours. He talked about his upcoming book Colossians Remixed: Subverting the Empire. He identified what he describes as contemporary expressions of the ‘principalities and powers’, i.e. global consumerism/capitalism (greed a virtue) + pax americana. He told us that dualism is the enemy of a useful Church. And he liked Fast Food Nation!

and wot a talk it was. Kinda rambling and free-wheeling, but I can tell it’s gonna sink right down there and do funny things to me.
Seminal moments.
A great night. Like taking a shower, such gatherings need to happen regularly to keep doing good. I liked what Brian said about it not being our job to create / institute the kingdom. That’s already been done. I think our problem is often rooted in idealism. We have an ideal of what this kingdom should be like and we try to make it happen. But it an’t our job!
actually, ironically enough, I thought that was the weakest part of his whole discussion. But I appreciate that what people ‘listen for’, and thus what they hear, are different things.
