I have spoken

by Matthew Bartlett @ 6:33 pm

‘Knowledge’ in the Knowledge Economy is gnostic. It’s facts and statistics and marketing nous and sharemarket savvy and scientific manipulation, not sacrifice or service or faith or hope or love.

misuse of apostrophes disturbs my aura

  2. Matthew says:

And mine! But where have I misused them?

    (welcome)

  3. Digitaleus says:

That’s why they don’t call it the emotion and sacrifice economy.

  4. Matthew says:

O what I meant was: a nicer meaning for the word ‘knowledge’ is faith hope etc, rather than stats savvy etc.

  5. Digitaleus says:

And what I meant was: as delightful as hope, faith and love are, they’re not knowledge. Perhaps they’re a part of wisdom, but it’s not the wisdom economy either.

Knowledge isn’t the pure ideal that you seem to want it to be. On the whole, it’s good, but it has it’s weaknesses, it has bad uses, and some knowledge is better than others.

You can’t give words new meanings to make them friendlier, any more than you can solve problems by donning rose-coloured glasses.

  6. Jenny says:

you didn’t. I was feeling hostile to apostrophes in general, the daggers of contraction, so to speak.

  7. Matthew says:

You can try and recover old meanings.

Perhaps everyone has glasses on, of various shades. Perhaps they’re strapped to our faces, and the best we can do is change the tint of the lenses, and usually even that is changed for us.
