Camp

by Matthew Bartlett @ 10:45 am

I spent the long weekend at Queens Birthday Camp. It was a nice time. It was fun being one of the old guys. It is hard to remember what it was like going to youth camps as a small person chock full of insecurities. The camp theme was Stewardship, which chuffed me. The end of Exodus 35 is choice, where CRAFTSMANSHIPly abilities are ascribed to the Spirit of God being in the craftsmen and women. I enjoyed pulling out some generic questions to good effect: “What is one of your favourite places in the world?”, “What are five of your favourite things?”, “What’s one thing you’re really good at?”. Five of my first cousin twice removed Helena’s favourite things are Going To The Pool, Going To The river, Playing Piano, Going To Friends’ Houses and Eating Dessert. I think she is six. The three older angels at my table listed Chocolate as one of their Five Favourite Things.

The Rev. Kavanaugh said he thinks the fire St Peter talks about cleanses rather than destroys the earth, else the whole creation would be groaning to be destroyed, which is nuts. That’s a cool point because it means our work here is worthwhile, looking after the world is an excellent thing to spend our energies on, it’s a new Heavens and Earth we’re promised, not just a new Heavens.

The little guys are funny, but they aren’t as funny as we were back in the day. They told me when they talk to old people at church they have to be fake, either goody two-shoes fake or funny-guy fake. I was scared for them driving home in Holdens and prayed no one would die on the way back. I’ve been driving since I was fifteen and it’s not my fault I’m still alive.

I am back home now and polishing off my $6 bottle of Queen Adelaide Riesling. Some music is just right for slightly boozed. David Gray, Keane work well. Nothing too demanding.

dear matt. thanks for your attendance at camp. It was fun to hae you there. Reminded me a bit of the days when we used to be the cool guys at camp. i think we still kind of are. blessings to you and all the other peeps who made the effort.

  2. Hans says:

Great that you went Matt, good on all you other older and cooler young folk that went. Matt, Queen Adelaide is overpriced at $6-00, it may do permanent harm, I recommend Corbans White label, about the same price but the wines are recognizably varietal and will not rot your innards.

  3. Matthew says:

It was the cheapest wine I’d ever seen. I can’t believe they call it Riesling, they should be honest and just say “Vaguely white”.

  4. jono says:

Great mentoring team. You guys are MAD!

  5. dan says:

Fire is for refining. The good stuff is left and the crap is burned away – ie: the refining of gold. The work we do for the kingdom is gold. The fruit of any other labour is crap.

riesling is the man. although I’m more down with the reds.

  6. re: being cool guys at camp

    a) dave you are no longer cool. you are a dickhead at camps. I am going to punch you again.
    b) the little guys looked like they were going to be cool, but then they started saying ‘aqua’ and ‘aqua-schlong’
    c) i didn’t die while driving the holden. am I still cool?

  7. Matthew says:

    a. David is cool at camp, but in a cool-leader way.
    b. amen
    c. you had Mummy & Daddy in car, so doesn’t count.

  8. Sternum says:

    a) David is cool for being at camps. And what kind of girl punches in the groin, Chud?
    b) Amen
    c) You had mummy and daddy in the car, and the car isn’t yours, so no you are not cool.

  9. david says:

    a) refer to matt and tim’s comments.
    b) amen.
    c) if you think you are cool for driving a cool classic car that is not yours with your mummy and daddy in it, then good for you. But if that’s the case, then myself, who owns TWO cool classic cars, drives them round lots, and has never died while driving them… man, I must be cooler than StrongBad. well, we all know that’s not true. In short, no, you are not cool.

  10. dan says:

    a) i wasn’t there – but david does sound cool.
    b) amen.
    c) classic cars are cool. This, however, has no bearing on the driver whatsoever.

  11. a) i punched him in the cock. not the groin.

  12. Sternum says:

    c) Classic cars are cool. And it does have a bearing on the driver. Driving daddy’s car doesn’t get you many cool points. But, owning your own classic car and driving it gets lots of points. Coolness is rated on a number of things. Your vehicle is one of those things. I, for instance, drive a red scooter. While not as cool as a classic car, it is cooler than, say…a standard Nissan Primera which you see every 5 secs on the motorway, IMHO.

  13. dan says:

I guess we need to differentiate between the coolness of the car, and the coolness of the driver. Classic cars are inherently cool in and of themselves, regardless of the driver.
The coolness of the driver, however, is greatly dependent on a) the intrinsic coolness of the car, and b) the driver’s relationship with said car.
If the cool classic car is obviously owned by oneself, and it is obvious the driver is aware of the sheer coolness of his car, and therefore looks after it carefully, exercising great stewardship, then the driver is very cool.
If the cool classic car is owned by oneself, and yet the driver is unaware of the coolness of the car, and therefore treats it like a hack, not servicing it, nor cleaning it, then the driver is not cool.

I have an Alfa sitting in my garage on blocks and in pieces. It is a cool car, because it is Italian, and drives like no other car I’ve driven as yet.
However, I am not cool, since I have neglected it. I am an uncool and bad steward.

  14. david says:

I like your reasoning dan. That means that: because I own two classic cars and care for them both very well… I must be the coolest of the cool. In fact, StrongBad should watch out.

  15. bad steward looks like bastard when you read it quickly

  16. dan says:

yeah, if you squint a bit and jiggle your head from side-to-side as you read.
    David, you’re doubly cool. steward^2
