Great chord progressions in that song, as well as a cunning little counter-melody. Lyrics go over my head. I get a general forlorn feel from them, but no specific meaning. What I would expect from a scientologist (brilliant piece on that in an Aussie show John Saffran’s Musical Jamboree). Maybe you have some deeper insight into the lyrics?
Yeah that John Saffran show was genius. The song has always seemed quite hopeful to me, like everything’s a mess now but soon it’ll be all good. Like “there’s one thing I tell you friend – All our trials gonna come to an end” but happier than that song. Does sound a bit Second Coming-ish, but apparently Scientologists don’t believe in that.
I don’t actually think Beck is a practicing scientologist. The best proof that John Saffran could come up with was a “dramatic re-enactment” of Beck at a Scientologist conference (i.e. it was all made up).

Mwahaha, funny ol’ memory.
