rIP

by Matthew Bartlett @ 12:57 pm

After about three years of being 202.0.34.69, with a shiny new cable modem I’m now 203.96.154.125. I was 202.0.34.69 through four different phone number & physical addresses, and two different web and email addresses, and I guess I’d kind of assumed I’d be 202.0.34.69 forever. All flesh is grass, however, and all things must pass.

Well the irony is, with the scarcity of IPv4 allocations, 202.0.34.69 will be anything but dead. Infact it will lie in an intermediate state, awaiting the imminent reincarnation which will most likely see it return as the layer 3 interface to a server, a wireless device, a 3G cellphone, or even, (if it was well behaved), another cable modem!

Incidentally, today we were priviledged enough to go on a small field trip into the networking room, and we surprised to find that the biggest box was infact the porn filter. It was yellow.

I’d be yellow too if I’d watched all that stuff. Shame on that filter.

Well I’m 2048-435037569-320547. But what in blue blazers does that mean, bat man? Oh my. This line of comments are truly sad. I have no idea what on earth you are talking about.

Hi Kate, it may suprise you to know that you’re actually 218.101.88.229 – or you were yesterday, anyway – these things float around a bit for dial-up users. Here’s a Wikipedia entry on IP numbers

Sorry Matt. I didn’t expect a serious answer in return. And forgive me, but I won’t have a look at that link because frankly I don’t want or care to know what you’re talking about.

Well, ‘each to their own’ as they say. May the force be with you.

    “the number 3482223596, written as 207.142.131.236.” …………..of course……?

  10. I say congratulations for this thread. I found Jono’s comments very interesting.
